Historical research still to be further investigated attributes the design and construction to B. Klaassen at the Allemansgeest yard in Voorschoten, where for decades the ‘Rolls Royce’ series of Dutch motor yachts was built: the Super Van Craft, very elegant motor yachts whose models ranged from 11 to 22 m, many units of which were exported to France, Germany and the United States between the 1960s and 1980s.
Walking along the Korte Vliet canal from Leiden towards Voorschoten, you eventually end up on a cobbled path with an old metal arch bridge. The path ends a little further along the Hofweg towards the Allemansgeest restaurant. Standing on the arched bridge, you can see a small harbour, the buildings and boathouse of a former shipyard: a past glory in serious decline.
Today it is hard to imagine that in the past hundreds of classic yachts were built at this spot in Voorschoten by the Klaassen yard. In the early years, the yard was called Allemansgeest. The founder of the yard, B. Klaassen, praised his product in a sales brochure from the late 1950s: "So far you have only known our cruisers from a few photos and drawings, which unfortunately did not do them justice, but the reality is more convincing, especially the beautiful lines, finish and space. May I invite you to visit our company in person?"
Unfortunately it is no longer possible to visit the Voorschoten shipyard, it went bankrupt in 2003.
RAMONA was born here to a design by B. Klaassen. She is not a series-produced Super Van Craft but a one-off, probably designed before 1950 but built in 1964 with characteristics of an elegant long-distance cruiser rather than a summer holiday motor yacht.
In the 1970s, at that time under the name of Holiday, after events not entirely known she found herself seized and abandoned in a Genoa shipyard and bought at court auction by an Italian entrepreneur who restored her original name and a proper restoration.
Since the early 2000s RAMONA has been in the hands of the family of the current owner, who in 2017 entrusted her captain De Belvis with the direction of the second thorough restoration in Fiumicino, which was completed in July 2019. In 2024 a final very accurate refit made her perfect in every detail and extraordinarily elegant.
